Empowerment: J, P, Z
Summary & Process
Our group chose to create a children’s book on the topic of Empowerment. Since this can be a complicated topic for kids to understand, I wanted my pages to be lighthearted and uplifting, and I wanted my interactions to be simple and encourage exploration and discovery.
J is for Journey
The first letter was J for Journey. I wanted to try and show that everyone in life takes a different road in life. To depict this, I chose rolling hills with many roads, with a distant sunrise, to symbolize that all of life it still ahead.
P is for Planet
The second letter was P for Planet. Many of the letters already tackled diversity, so I chose to focus on taking care of the Earth itself. In bubbles around the globe I depicted three children doing things that can benefit the environment, that real children are capable of doing themselves.
Z is for ZZZ
The last letter was Z for ZZZ (sleep). I used this letter to tie the topics of the book together. Children should know that being kind to others is important, but so is taking care of themselves. I went for a simple illustration of a boy asleep in his bed.
Conclusion
With this project I did my best to explore many styles and I used many different tools to translate those styles and textures into print, digital, and interactive settings. In the end I learned the importance of illustrative flexibility to make even traditionally rendered designs work across multiple mediums.
